Films for the Bookish Type

A new addition to First Three Chapters, now and again I will tell you about a film that I think you Book Lovers will adore.  They may be old or new, some you will have seen and some you may have not.  Hope you enjoy!

This Week's Choice:

Down With Love (2003)

Set in the 1960's, Down with Love is a romantic comedy with a fantastic twist.  Renée Zellweger plays Barbara Novak, the author of a world-wide bestselling non-fiction book called Down with Love which advises women to avoid love and focus on their careers, whilst enjoying sex à la carte, like men do.
The men of New York become increasingly disgruntled with Barbara as women everywhere begin to follow her teachings.  Drawn to her beautiful looks and shocked by her success, the charming ladies man and magazine writer Catcher Block (Ewan McGregor) sets out to make Barbara fall in love with him, and thus expose her as a fraud.  But he didn't count on falling for her...

P.S. Thank you to Darren for introducing me to this great film x

Alice in Wonderland

source: infdaily

The film will not be released until March 2010, but already there is a huge buzz about Tim Burton's live action adaptation of Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland.
The star-studded cast includes:

Johnny Depp - The Mad Hatter
Anne Hathaway - The White Queen
Alan Rickman - The Caterpillar
Helena Bonham Carter - The Red Queen
Christopher Lee - The Jabberwock
Michael Sheen - The White Rabbit
Stephen Fry - The Chesire Cat
and the relatively unknown  'In Treatment' star Mia Wasikowska as Alice (seen on set in the picture above.)

I cannot wait!

Women's Aid Advertisement

I heard about this anti-domestic violence advertisement a while ago, but only got around to watching it now.  It stars Keira Knightly and was created by Atonement director Joe Wright.  I was expecting something far more graphic, considering the ad has been banned from UK T.V.  Yes it is disturbing, but so is the frightening fact that 2 women die every week as a result of domestic violence.  I agree it is not fit for day-time viewing but I see no reason why it couldn't have been shown after 9pm.   The ad has been viewed over 1 million times on Youtube and will also be shown in Cinemas.
