Great Adaptations

Found out about this on the lovely Beth's blog.  Film 4 are showing a selection of award winning movies based on books throughout April and May.  And they are also running a competition where you can win all of the 67 featured books.  How exciting! You can enter here. Closing date 11th May.

My favorite adaptation ever is The Commitments.  What's yours?

I'm Back

Venice - truly one of the prettiest cities in the world.  I loved it and I didn't want to leave.  It was everything I hoped it would be.
Highlights? the wow factor of the Basilica, visiting the Peggy Guggenheim Collection (thanks for the tip Emily!), the gloriously sunny Wednesday afternoon on Lido beach, listening to the musicians play in St Mark's square near midnight, the range of smells at the bustling Rialto food Market, the view of the city from the top of the Campanile....

More details and photographs to follow tomorrow.  For now I must go and get some sleep.

Venice

I'm off to Venice for a week.  It will be my first time in Italy.  I cannot wait! It looks so beautiful in the guidebook I bought.  Has anybody been?

I shall talk to you when I get back next weekend.

Young at Heart

Don't you just love a good children's book?  I have really gotten back into them lately.

I know I'm biased, but if you're looking for some great children's fiction then check out the Irish writers.  We really do have some great ones.  The top three, in my opinion, are:

Eoin Colfer - author of the Artemis Fowl series as well as others such as The Supernaturalist.  I am convinced I was one of his first hardcore fans.  I have a treasured first edition of the first Artemis Fowl book.

Derek Landy - author of the Skullduggery Pleasant series.  He is my absolute favorite children's author at the moment.

and

Roddy Doyle - the fabulous Booker Prize winning author.  He branched into children's fiction a couple of years ago.  Check out Wilderness, or his latest offering Her Mother's Face, or laugh yourself silly with The Rover Adventures.  More info here.

All men!  I also adore Kate Thompson's books, but I don't know whether we can claim her...she does live in Ireland but wasn't born here!
